Harpagophytum procumbens (Pedaliaceae family) is commonly known as devil's claw or Harpago . It originates from Botswana , Namibia and South Africa [1] This plant has as main constituent harpagósido (iridoid glucoside), responsible for their most important medicinal properties. However, other components such as b - sitoesteróis also exert therapeutic effect. [1 , 2, 3 , 9, 14 ] Several studies have shown that these compounds are responsible for the anti- inflammatory resulting from Harpagophytum procumbens and potent analgesic effect . [ 7, 9 ] have the ability to interfere with the inflammatory process by inhibiting the synthesis of eicosanoids (prostaglandins , thromboxanes and leukotrienes - primary chemical mediators of inflammation ) by selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase - 2 (COX - 2) and 5 - lipoxygenase (5 - LOX) . They may also have the ability to suppress the synthesis of nitric oxide ( particularly important in the mechanism of the pain ) . [1 , 5, 7, 8 , 12, 14 ] Thus, the Harpago is especially effective in the support of the degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system ( pain and inflammation of joints) therapy . [ 2, 14 ] The European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (SCOP ) recommends the use of Harpagophytum procumbens for pain caused by arthritis management ( especially osteoarthritis ), back pain (back pain ) , loss of appetite and dyspepsia ( difficulty in digestion ) . [1 , 2, 5 , 11, 13 ] This plant is also effective in relieving tendonitis , osteoarthritis of the knee and hip joints , rheumatism (rheumatoid arthritis) , myalgia (muscle pain) and bursitis (inflammation of bursa between the joints). [ 6, 10 , 11, 13 ] In some clinical studies , it has been found that some subjects with pain and impaired driving caused by the presence of osteoarthritis, after several weeks of treatment with Harpago , regained some mobility and reduced dose of anti-inflammatory drugs - inflammatory and analgesic taking ( to reduce the occurrence of adverse effects) , verification of a better quality of life. [ 6] is also described, Harpagophytum procumbens medicinal properties in the liver , since this plant is purifying and hepatoprotective and is therefore effective in the treatment of hepatobiliary pathologies lower. Is bile ( it stimulates the release of bile into the small intestine , which facilitates the digestion of fatty foods ) and useful in cases of cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) and cholelithiasis ( gallstones ) . [1] is also hypolipidemic ( reduce cholesterol levels ) and is used as adjuvant therapy in cases of gout ( uric acid in excess ) , increases the excretion of uric acid in urine , a reduction of its concentration in the blood . [1 ] The Harpago is effective when taken alone or together with anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs ) . Scientific studies suggest that Harpagophytum procumbens has a similar efficacy to some chemical drugs . Several people who took Harpago , could reduce the dose of NSAIDs needed for relief of pain caused by osteoarthritis and in some cases mild to moderate disease , pain control was possible only Harpago administration . [ 4, 11, 14] is studying a possible antiarrhythmic activity for this plant . [1 ] The medicinal properties of Harpago become particularly important for those with pain control whose control depends on the chemical drugs (often using increasingly large doses). Harpagophytum procumbens has no significant side effects (even if administered in high doses) and hence can be used for long periods of time. This is a big advantage over synthetic drugs (especially NSAIDs ), which cause problems in the stomach and liver. [ 4, 5 ]

Soy isoflavones are nonsteroidal compounds endowed with estrogen-mimetic activity, ie, have the property of fixing the estrogen receptor. Are, by this fact, called phytoestrogens. The soybean is rich in isoflavone glucosides, and particularly genistein and daidzein. The isoflavone genistein is the most active has been the subject of numerous studies due to its anticancer properties. They are used in the prevention of symptoms related to menopause, breast cancer, prostate cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases (hypercholesterolemia) without presenting the side effects related to estrogen synthesis.

The St. John's wort, or St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been known for hundreds of years in Europe. Currently it is used as an antidepressant, showing good results in the treatment of mild depressions. Became known as anxiolytic and useful in the treatment of melancholia. Homeopathy has always used the St. John's wort, have been considered as important as arnica, being called the "arnica of the nerves." Recently been subjected to meta-analysis between large numbers of jobs Europeans and North Americans, when it was proven its antidepressant action. This action is due to inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO), the enzyme which acts on neurotransmitters. Some studies also indicate an action in the inhibition of catechol-methyl-transferase (COMT) and others believe that the action has hepericina in brain serotonin reuptake.
